Where are we in the Ice Bucket Challenge clone lifespan? Say hello to “Hold a Coke With Your Boobs,” a trending hopeful that, supposedly, exists to spread awareness of breast cancer.
Breast cancer research is a cause worth championing. Women and men need reminders to self-examine and go in for check-ups. One can never scream loud enough when it comes to fighting the disease. Is Hold a Coke With Your Boobs the right way to spread this vital message? There are pros and cons.
Behind the seductive, YouTube-baiting campaign is Elite Talent Referral, an adult entertainment talent scouting agency. If that sends up red flags, ETR deserves a little credit: as its Facebook page makes apparent, between every video of a bosom-squeezed Coca-Cola Classic squeezed into a bosom are giant links to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. ETR has something to gain from keeping healthy breasts alive, believe it or not.
(Update: The Breast Cancer Research Foundation reached out to Esquire to clarify that the organization does not support this campaign, does not have any additional information about it on its website, and does plan on accepting any donations from this campaign.)
Hold a Coke With Your Boobs is picking up a little steam in Europe, where holding bottles of one’s favorite carbonated drink is a pastime (nothing screams France like Perrier held between a lady’s seins). That said, any cynicism towards the endeavor is fair; charity can’t disguise ETR’s brand strategy motivation. If Hold a Coke With Your Boobs takes off like the Ice Bucket Challenge, the company’s name travels with it. This hashtag-driven promotion is all about exposure (ahem). Not to mention that, when you look past the gratuitous nudity, Hold a Coke With Your Boobs borderline disrespectful to breast cancer survivors. Out of 231,840 annual cases, breast cancer takes 40,290 lives a year. Many women (and men) undergo mastectomies out of survivals. The surgery, an alteration of one’s life-long appearance, can cause emotional and physical distress. Pairing boobs with cans steers eyes towards the cause, but as a form of support, the goofy challenge is backwards.
So that’s the Hold a Coke With Your Boobs challenge. We’re guessing the celebrities won’t line up for this one. Unless… uh, Conan, you in?
